다양한 멀티미디어 작업으로 구성된 “Inhabiting the Interface”는 삶의 모든 면이 데이터화될 수 있고, 무엇보다도 재빠르게 퍼져나가는 정보를 통해 현실을 인식하는 세상에서 사람이 서로, 그리고 자신과 어떠한 관계를 맺을 수 있는지 탐구한다. 급속한 기술 발전은 일종의 사회적 역설을 만들었다. 물리적, 지리적 제약으로부터 자유롭고, 손쉬운 경로를 통해 서로 더 가까워지고, 새로운 방식으로 연결을 발전시키며, 영향력 있는 집단적 흐름을 만들어 낸다. 반면에 우리의 삶은 인터넷과 소셜 미디어를 통해 필터링되어, 직접적으로 경험하고, 교류하고, 대면하지 않고도 서칭을 통해 누군가의 존재를 파악하고, 접속한 채 소식을 알림 받고 관계망을 구축한다. 이는 우리를 유형적인 현실로부터 더 멀어지게 하고, 직접적이고 물리적인 측면에 있어 서로를 더 분리하는 데 기여한다.

이러한 분리의 증상인 고립감은 이제 우리 각자의 존재에 깊이 뿌리내렸다. 하지만 나는 우리들 사이의 경계가 인터페이스 같기를 상상했다. 공유경계라는 개념으로서의 인터페이스를 떠올렸다. 그것은 경계, 구분선, ‘물질 또는 공간의 두 부분 사이에 놓여 있는 표면,’ ‘두 시스템 간의 상호 작용 수단 또는 장소’이다. 여기와 저기를 구분하면서도 그들이 마주할 자리를 만든다. 반대편과 맞닿는 곳이다. 인터페이스는 만남의 장이자 장벽이다.

분리시키는 감각과 연결되는 감각을 동시에 지닌 상태를 우리 몸의 막인 피부와 Inhabiting the Interface에서 다루는 공간의 벽에서도 불러일으키고 싶었다. 우리의 피부는 몸의 안과 밖을 나누는 경계이자 자아의 범위를 규정하는 요인이지만 다른 존재의 접촉과 연결을 기다리고 허용하는 막이기도 하다. 접촉은 분절과 소외를 상기시키는 동시에 예상치 못한 친밀감과 결속의 순간을 만들어낼 잠재력을 가지고 있다.

벽을 접점이자 경계로 사용하면서, 물리적인 측면과 감각적인 측면에 있어서의 제한과 접근을 우리가 어떻게 인식하는지에 대해 고민했다. Mediated Touch에서는 벽 안으로부터 뻗어져 나오는 빛이 견고한 석고벽에 꼬매져 있는 실리콘에 스며들어 벽 밖의 관객에게 이미지의 존재를 드러낸다. 벽에 의해 서로 떨어져 있던 내부와 외부의 구분이 일시적으로 무너져 실리콘 표피 안으로 녹아든다.

언뜻 보기에 Shared Connection은 벽에 뚫려 있는 구멍들의 배열처럼 보이지만 이는 벽에 내장되어 있는 현미경의 렌즈이다. 벽에 나 있는 개구부를 통해, 접근할 수 없던 곳에 제한적이나마 접근할 수 있게 되는 것이기에 관객은 불투명한 벽 이면에 숨겨져 있을 무언가를 기대하며 벽에 다가가게 된다. 벽에 몸을 맞붙이고는 육안으로는 발견할 수 없는 이미지를 현미경 렌즈를 통해 보게 된다. 벽의 구멍과 렌즈는 추상적이고 유기적인 형태들이 서로 얽히고 충돌하고 있는 이미지로의 작은 포털이 된다.

Habitable Dialogue의 부유하는 표면은 이미지의 물리적 지지체이자 스포트라이트를 유기체적인 이미지로 매개변환하는 필터이다. 피부막의 아웃라인에 의해 구분지어진 형태들은 경계를 맞닿은 채 포개어지고 서로에게 스며들어 있다. 차단막으로서의 벽이 아닌, 서로 다른 요소들이 상호 작용하는 무대로서의 벽과 레진 조각은 그들의 표면 너머로 존재감을 확장하며 경계의 투과성과 유동성을 탐색한다.

Consisting of a range of multimedia works, "Inhabiting the Interface" is a commentary on our ever-changing society, especially in terms of the internet and media inundation. It investigates how humans relate to one another and to themselves in this new age, where information travels faster than our abilities to process and cope with it. Rapid technological developments have created somewhat of a social paradox; on one hand, humans have become closer to each other through these channels, forging connections to new people and developing said connections in new ways. On the other hand, our lives are now filtered through the internet and social media, contributing to parasocial relationships and feelings of isolation.

Interface, by definition, means the place at which independent and often unrelated systems meet and act on or communicate with each other. We are usually accustomed to viewing walls as blockages, preventing us from experiencing another space. But the interface is both a meeting ground and barrier, a shared boundary, forming an overlapping state through connection between fragmented things and creating a site for their encounter. Kim explores this space in her new works. "Shared Connection" consists of microscopes embedded within peephole apertures. These apertures contain abstract, organism-like imagery, with colorful elements intertwining and colliding, opening a portal to discovery and rerouting the viewer’s perspective both through that space and within themselves. In "Mediated Touch", silicone forms are sewn into the wall, binding the permeable to the permanent. Lit from behind, the organic forms become poetic gestures that illuminate us, as if our own contents hold the same amount of grace.

The artist links these shared commonalities of walls, boundaries, and space to our own skin, yet another paradoxical concept. Our skin is a confine that divides the interior and exterior of a body, a parameter that creates the boundary of the self, but at the same time, a membrane which allows the touch and connection of another being. Kim’s overlap of images, light, and space creates an imaginary coexistence of here and there, of different times that are far apart, yet each connects to each other, things which are separate, but also carrying traces of the body in coexistence. In her "Habitable Dialogue" series, the wall acts as a connective tissue rather than a boundary, a site where different forms of intercession and transformation can take place. It is similar in this way to a memory that does not tangibly exist, but is intensely felt internally – even if no one is here, the body is anticipated and implied. Like a form of membrane, the interface holds the potential for activating new types of relations, achieving a simultaneous separation and merge.

Throughout the past few years, although we have realized a deeper sense of life, a certain absence and isolation still permeates. Kim’s moving images, printed matter, and installations explore the complexities in the contemporary experience of physical disembodiment, seeking to create placeholders for someone who is not here but is somewhere else, waiting to collide. Her work is a deep rumination on how, both in virtual and physical space, we as humans yearn for connection and clarity without always being able to find it.
